Ransomware - What is ransomware? Ransomware Definition
What is Ransomware?
Just as the name suggests, ransomware is a type of malware that results in a ransom demand from attackers. The ransomware malware encrypts files in the infected device and attackers demand payment in exchange for the decryption key. Ransomware, like any other type of malware, can be spread through various means, including email links and attachments, infected software, or malicious websites.
Ransomware is often targeted at organizations that can pay up to millions of dollars. However, in recent years, personal PCs have been attacked and ransom demands made by attackers.
Once ransomware infects a device, attackers attach a crypto wallet, such as bitcoin, through which to pay a ransom. Crypto transactions are untraceable hence the huge liking by malicious attackers.
How to protect against ransomware?
To protect against ransomware, and other types of malware, it's essential to keep applications such as OS and other software up to date, use reputable antivirus software, and practice safe browsing habits such as avoiding clicking on email attachments and visiting unsafe websites. Also, install applications from their official pages and app stores. Illegal applications are often used to spread malware such as ransomware.
Remember to regularly back up important data to help mitigate the impact of malware attacks.
