What is a Computer Worm?

Worms are another type of malware. Worms are particularly known for their replication across networks. A worm does not need files and applications to exist as it can exist on its own. Once a worm infects a PC or device, it replicates itself moving across an entire network. The stealth nature of worms makes them suitable for attackers who want to infiltrate an organization, not to cause damage to computers and files (like viruses do) but to gather information on the particular organization.

Some worms are also created to hijack the computational power of an organization's network. The complex and independent nature of worms makes them suitable to run complex attacks such as running other programs, collect information and send to malicious actors and others. There have been cases of attackers using worms to use an organization’s network computational power for other attacks such as DDOS, and even mining cryptocurrency.

How to protect against worms?

To protect against worms, and other types of malware, it's essential to keep applications such as OS and other software up to date, use reputable antivirus software, and practice safe browsing habits such as avoiding clicking on email attachments and visiting unsafe websites. Also, install applications from their official pages and app stores. Illegal applications are often used to spread malware such as worms.

Remember to regularly back up important data to help mitigate the impact of worm attacks on computers and networks both at home and work places.
