Converting Gigabytes to Kilobytes

To understand the conversion Mathematics between Kilobytes and Gigabytes, we have to go back to the basics of bits and bytes.

Always remember that 8 bits are equal to 1 byte, and that 1024 (210) bytes = 1 KB

From GB to KB, we will have to convert the GB to MB and then the MB to KB.
Since 1024 KB = 1 MB and
1024 MB = 1 GB
We can say that:
1 GB = (1024 × 1024 ) KB, which can be written as
1 GB = 1,048,576 KB

Example
Convert 2 GB to KB
Remember: 1 GB = (1024 × 1024 ) KB
2 × (1048576) = 2097152

Therefore, 2 GB = 2,097,152 KB;

This is the actual conversion.
In some instances, you will find conversion based on 1000 other than 1024. In this conversion, you can say that
1000 KB = 1 MB and 1000 MB = 1 GB
Therefore, you just multiply the value in GB by 1,000,000 to get the value in KB.;
2 × 1000000 = 2000000;
Therefore, 2 GB = 2,000,000 KB

Gigabytes, Megabytes and Kilobytes

Gigabytes, Megabytes and Kilobytes are units to storage that are used to identify:

  • The size of a file such as a document, picture, or video. For instance, you might have heard someone say,
    "Each photo on my phone is roughly 6 MBs"

  • The size of a storage device such as Hard Disk Drive (HDD), Solid State Drive (SDD), Flash Disks, and Memory chips. Other components such as Graphic Cards and RAM modules are also identified by their sizes in terms of GBs, MBs or KBs. For instance, someone might say:
    "My phone has 4 GB RAM"
    Other computing components such as CPU's Cache also use MB, KB, and bytes to show available size.

  • Storage space in cloud computing and virtual space. When comparing cloud storage packages, the available storage space play a big role as it is a fundamental price component. The available space is often given in Gigabytes, such as 30 GB, 60 GB, or 100 GB. For instance, by default, Google Drive has a free 15 GB cloud storage space of its users.

Although KB, MB, and GB are the most common, there are also Terabytes (TB), Petabyte (PB), Exabyte (EB), Zettabyte (ZB), and Yottabyte (YB). Now without getting too complicated, sizes beyond Petabyte are currently hypothetical with a few organizations claiming to have reached the Petabyte storage capacity.
There are Hard Disk Drives (HDD) and Solid State Drives (SDD) with 1 TB storage capacity. As of 2022, the highest RAM capacity on a single stick was 512 GB by Samsung.
